A Haji On Way To Medinah (Iqbal's Ek Haji Medine Ke Raastey Mein)

A Haji on way to Medinah
(Iqbal’s Ek Haji Medine Ke Raastey Mein)

The caravan was looted in the desert and destination is far,
This wilderness that is dry ocean’s coast is far,

My co-travellers fell prey to robbers’ daggers,
Those who survived being despirited retracted towards Mecca,

That Bukharist youth! How happily sacrificed his life!
In the shape of death he has received a new life!

The dagger of the robber to him was as if crescent of Eid,
‘O Medinah’ in the heart and on his lips was slogan of tawheed,

Fear says that “don’t go towards Yathrib alone”,
Passion says that thou art Muslim, fearlessly move alone,

Without pilgrimage to Medinah shall I retreat to house of God!
On the day of judgement what face shall I show to devotees of God!

The traveller of Hijaz has no fear of death,
In migration of Mohammed to Yathrib is buried this secret,

Though it is safe to travel with proper protection,
But in the challenge of danger lies pleasure of devotion,

Alas! This loss conscious intellect, how clever it is!
And devotion of man, how audacious it is!
